Seborrheic keratoses are common, non-cancerous skin growths that often appear as raised, waxy, or brown spots. Although harmless, they can sometimes cause irritation or cosmetic concerns. At SURFACE Dermatology, we offer assessment and appropriate removal options.

Seborrheic keratosis (SK) removal is a dermatological treatment that addresses benign skin growths commonly appearing as raised, waxy, or rough patches. These growths can vary in size, colour, and texture and may develop on different areas of the body. Treatment options are determined by the appearance, location, and nature of the growth following an appropriate assessment.
SK removal may be considered for benign skin growths that affect the appearance or texture of the skin. Treatment can address raised lesions that catch on clothing or jewellery, become irritated, or cause cosmetic concerns. A professional assessment is recommended to confirm the nature of the growth and determine whether removal is appropriate.
SK removal is generally well tolerated, with the level of discomfort depending on the removal technique used and the area being treated. A numbing agent may be used when appropriate.
SK removal typically takes 15–30 minutes, depending on the number, size, and location of the growths being treated. Appointment times may vary depending on the treatment approach and individual needs.
Some temporary redness or sensitivity may occur following treatment as the skin begins to heal.
SK removal may not be suitable for individuals with growths that have changed in size, shape, or colour, or those with lesions that have not been properly assessed. Active skin infections, open wounds, or certain skin conditions in the treatment area may also require postponing treatment. A professional assessment is recommended to determine suitability and ensure the growth is appropriate for removal.
what to expect
Consultation
During your consultation, your Dermatologist will assess the skin growths, including their appearance, size, and location. Your skin concerns and treatment goals will be discussed, along with suitable removal options. This assessment helps determine whether SK removal is appropriate and what approach may be recommended for your individual needs.
Treatment
The treatment area is cleansed, and the appropriate removal technique is selected based on the skin growth and its location. The growth is then treated using the chosen method, which may involve techniques such as cautery, cryotherapy, or gentle scraping. After treatment, the area is cared for as needed, and aftercare instructions are provided to support the healing process.
Post Treatment
Following SK removal, the treated area may appear red or slightly swollen, with temporary scabbing or changes in skin texture as it heals. The skin should be cared for according to your Dermatologists aftercare instructions, including keeping the area clean and avoiding unnecessary irritation. Healing time varies depending on the removal technique and individual skin response, and the area should gradually recover over the following days to weeks.
Follow up
A follow-up may be recommended to assess the treated area and review the healing process. Your provider can address any questions, discuss the skin’s response to treatment, and provide additional aftercare guidance if needed. Further treatment may be considered depending on the initial results and individual skin concerns.
